The hardest part of beginning the process of being indie political was the realization that there is a possibility that I could be wrong on some things. I started this journey of working to bring people together in political peace in 2014. Growing tired of political division that is growing every day, I became interested in info gathering around 2017.

Info gathering is a fairly simple concept. Know as much as you can. However, I didn’t apply this when it came to political discussions. I believed I was right and others were wrong. My opinion is better and anybody who opposes my ideas are evil. This resulted in burnt bridges, bruised friends, and loss of contact with family members.

I asked myself an important question. If I was given 20 blocks of my life and had to dole them out, how would I do so. Turns out, 10 blocks went to my family and friends, 4 to my health, 3 to my career, 1 to my community, 1 to having fun, and one to politics.

Why should my one block compromise the relationships with my ten?

Things had to change, but how?

Getting rid of what is “right”

I realized that what I was doing was playing mindsports. This was a competition every time, and I would not let myself lose at all costs. I had to win the discussion.

In order for this to work, I needed to let something go. It dawned on me one day when I wondered how much information do I really have? It became a snowball down a hill moment and it came to me that maybe I’m not right about some things. And let me tell you, that was hard to do.

Once I did get past the disappointment, I began to get to work. When it came to me being right, I immediately threw that thought in the trash. If I think I’m right with the current information I have, then why would I bother to research anything more proactively. From now on, I’m not right, I’m not wrong, I’m gathering viewpoints and will not have time to judge others. In fact, why not learn from them too?

Indie Political and the different approach

I began carrying a small notebook in my pocket like a concealed weapon. A pen that fit on my keychain was there at all times. When a political conversation sprang up, I was ready to jot down the information that I could research at a later time. I could engage with questions about a person’s opinion. Nobody ever expected this approach and the results were a big improvement. I would ask questions as they came in and if somebody didn’t have the answer, I simply said that I didn’t either and am going to research this at a later time.

Open-minded Growth

In a world of left or right, I ran it up the gut and didn’t take sides with or against anybody. Instead, I chose to improve my knowledge base. I didn’t snark at these people, get arrogant, yell, or interrupt. It was just me, a notepad, pen, and my ears. When I am asked for my opinion, I often have many. I can now respond with “I have a few views on this, how many would you like?”

Any point of view you get, whether it be from somebody else, a news article, tv, etc., it should be viewed as “Maybe its right, but maybe its wrong”. Throw right and wrong away and get as many viewpoints as you possibly can and grow!

Human beings have made miraculous achievements over time through teamwork. The phone in your pocket is a testament to the ingenuity and creative nature we harbor within. However, when it comes to politics, we are constantly working against ourselves and not improving. Indie Political is a way to actually pull out of the tension and turn the energy into improving oneself and hopefully others.

When you view this website, please don’t assume this is right or wrong. I only ask that you view what we have here as a different viewpoint.

No left, no right, just up.
